22 TAC ch. 341. §341.2(c): 30 CCUs for PTs, 20 for PTAs each biennium. One contact hour equals 1 CCU for both live and self-study programs (§341.3(1)(B)(i)-(ii)). Renewal is biennial by the end of the licensee's birth month (§341.1(a)) and activities must be completed within the 24 months before expiration (§341.2(d)). After the mandatory jurisprudence module and human trafficking course, 27 CCUs (PT) or 17 CCUs (PTA) are open for elective coursework. There is NO cap on self-study, online, or self-paced hours and no live-hour minimum — the board's own category chart marks continuing education courses "1 CCU per contact hour, no limit." Texas does cap other categories (professional membership/service 15 CCUs PT / 10 PTA; charity care 15/10), which shows the board caps deliberately and chose not to cap self-study. Licensees self-report approval numbers at renewal; there is no CE Broker equivalent. Records must be kept 4 years after the license expiration date (§341.2(e)), and CE sponsors must keep participant records 4 years (§341.3(1)(A)(vii)). The executive council audits a random sample at least quarterly with a 30-day response window (§341.2(g)) — no audit percentage is published. Note §341.3(1)(A)(v) prohibits self-promotion of products or services during a program. No first-renewal exemption or proration appears anywhere in ch. 341.
Yes — Texas recognizes continuing education approved by another state's physical therapy board or APTA chapter, so our courses (approved through the Texas Physical Therapy Association) can count toward your renewal. Read the caveat below before you rely on it.
One caveat: Texas is the one state where our approval originates. All CE used for a Texas renewal must carry a Continuing Competence Approval Program (CCAP) approval number from the Texas Physical Therapy Association — the organization the board selected to review and approve courses (22 TAC §341.2(b), §341.3(1)(A)) — or come from a TPTA Accredited Provider. The reverse is also true and worth knowing: Texas accepts nothing on the strength of another state's board or APTA chapter approval. A course may be submitted to TPTA for approval after a licensee takes it, as long as approval lands before their renewal date.
